Birthdays on the Wild Side
(3-11 yrs.), Riverbend Nature Center, 703-759-9018. Celebrate your birthday by discovering the exciting world of nature. Choose to explore the world of reptiles and amphibians, uncover clues about forest animals, dig into dinosaurs, take an archaeology adventure, or go on an insect safari. Each party is active and will keep your group on the move. Two hour nature center rental including a one hour naturalist program $175. Themed goodie bags available, $4/bag. Call for available dates. Fee due at time of registration. Refunds for cancellation made within two weeks of program require written notice.

Fishing Fun Birthday Parties at Riverbend Park
(5-12 yrs.), Riverbend Park, 703-759-9018. Celebrate your birthday by having fishing fun with your friends and family. For children 5-7 yrs., naturalist-led activities include bank fishing, games, and activities. For children 8-12 yrs., a park naturalist will lead your group on an hour and a half fishing adventure from the bank or fishing from jon boats. All birthday programs include fishing rods/reels and tackle and a one hour indoor rental. Total party time 2.5 hours. Bank fishing parties $175, boat fishing parties $250. Themed goodie bags available, $4/bag. Call for available dates.

Rent our Space for your birthday party
Riverbend Park’s party room is available weekends and weekdays. Observe exhibit animals, use the open space for indoor activities, or venture outdoors. Steps from the building is a ¼-loop trail perfect for short hikes and other outdoor activities. Maximum 35 people. Call Riverbend Park at 703-759-9018 for available dates.

Schools
School field trips are offered in the spring, fall and winter. Field trips integrate SOL/Program of Studies with fun hands-on learning.

Scouts
Riverbend park offers a variety of scout programs from September-June for Bear scouts, Brownies, Daisies, Junior Girl Scouts, Tigers, Webelos, and Wolf scouts. Programs are listed in Parktakes call 703-222-4664 for a free subscription.

Public
Riverbend Park offers a variety of weekday, weekend, and nightime nature programs for families and individuals ages two years and up. Our Calendar of Events has details on this season's offerings.

Self-guided Activities:
Active Ways to Explore the Outdoors with Your Family

The Potomac River Gorge Trail - A Globally Rare Environment
(8 yrs. and up), daily 7am-dusk, Riverbend Picnic area by the Visitor Center, 703-759-9018. Enjoy a self-guided 2-mile hike along the Potomac River and find why The Nature Conservancy named the area "one of the most significant natural areas in the eastern United States." Fourteen trail stops reveal secrets of the Potomac River Gorge. The trail begins in the Riverbend picnic area and ends at Great Falls Park. FREE

Kayak Tours
Paddle the scenic and serene Potomac River in a kayak. The park offers a number of kayak tours (June-September) on a variety of topics. Most of our tours are designed for beginners. These are not whitewater tours. Introduce yourself to the world of kayaking, get some exercise and most of all enjoy the natural beauty of the river and wildlife. All of our instructors are certified with the American Canoe Association. Let your adventure begin here.

Fishing rod/reel rentals
Riverbend Visitor Center, 703-759-9018. Don't have a fishing rod? We can rent you what you need to fish at the park. Our rod/reel combinations are perfect for beginners and children. We supply you with a rod/reel rigged with line and tackle to get you started. Our visitor center also sells fishing tackle. Rentals are available 9am-4pm weekdays, except Tuesdays, and noon-4pm on weekends and holidays. All rods must be returned by 5pm. Cost per rental is $5 (maximum two hours). A valid driver's license is required. A Virginia or Maryland freshwater fishing license is required for persons 16 years or older to fish. Reservations recommended due to limited availability.

NEW! Jon boat Rentals at Riverbend Park
Riverbend Visitor Center, 703-759-9018. Jon boats are available for families, anglers, and anyone looking to enjoy some time on the river. Boats available Thursday through Monday from 7am until two hours prior to closing of the park (hours vary seasonally). Rental season: May 17 through October 8

  • 1/2 Day Rental (up to 3 hours) = $15
  • All Day Rental (3-6 hours) = $25

Boaters are advised to go upriver from the boat launch area to avoid the Aqueduct Dam which is located one mile down river. No boating is allowed past buoys down river. All rentals closed in hazardous conditions.

Exercise and Art
Riverbend Park offers low-impact exercise classes and art classes in the beautiful natural setting of the park.Get fit while enjoying natures changes during the seasons. Our Calendar of Events has details on current offerings.
