Park Authority Board Names Recipient of Sally Ormsby Environmental Stewardship AwardThe Fairfax County Park Authority Board has named Great Falls resident Robin Rentsch as the recipient of the second Sally Ormsby Environmental Stewardship Award. Rentsch, a longtime county resident and well-known community activist, was recognized for her work in establishing numerous county and regional trail systems, her advocacy on behalf of parks and her leadership in protecting the environment and upholding the tenets of conservation. She has been a tireless advocate for multi-use, non-motorized trails in Fairfax County. She has served on the Fairfax County Non-Motorized Trails Committee, W&OD Board, Cross County Trail Board, Potomac Heritage Trail Board, Potomac River Greenways Coalition Board, Great Falls Trail Blazers Board and the Equestrian Trails Alliance Board. Her support has also been crucial in the development of Frying Pan Farm Park, Turner Farm and passage of several park bond referenda. She is a founding member of Conserve Virginia as well as the Fairfax League of Conservation Voters, both groups dedicated to the support of officials committed to improving and protecting the environment. Rentsch was nominated by Dranesville District Park Authority Board Member Kevin Fay who noted, "Robin is one of those individuals you go to when you need something done. She is a catalyst for positive change and one of the hardest workers I know. She deserves this honor and follows in the footsteps of the late Sally Ormsby for whom this award was named." The Sally Ormsby Environmental Stewardship Award was established by the Park Authority Board on November 14, 2007, in recognition of Sally B. Ormsby's many years of service as a citizen steward whose actions have enhanced and promoted the careful, responsible and sustainable management of the natural resources entrusted to the Park Authority by the citizens of Fairfax County for present and future generations. This award recognizes an individual volunteer whose efforts embody the spirit and values of stewardship and result in tangible benefits for the environment and the community at large. The award will be presented the annual Elly Doyle Park Service and Outstanding Volunteer Awards presentation in November 2008.
