Open Space Preservation

In 2001, the Fairfax County Park Authority reached a major milestone as the land that the agency holds in trust for the people of Fairfax County topped 20,000 acres. The achievement followed a record-setting year of land acquisition, an appropriately grand finale to the agency's golden anniversary. It came about through unprecedented support, both from the voters of Fairfax County, who endorsed the last park bond referendum by 71 percent, and the Board of Supervisors who added to the bond's $20 million for land acquisition with innovative financing for additional purchases.

The open space set aside in parks helps make Fairfax County a wonderful place to live and work. At the same time, the very success of efforts to keep Fairfax green contributes to the pressure on the land that's left. Today, less than 14 percent remains undeveloped as the county's population nears 1 million and businesses look to Fairfax for corporate headquarters and commercial outlets. But happily, recognition of the importance of this precious resource is growing just in time to have a significant impact on efforts to preserve the open land that remains.

It isn't just in Fairfax County that people are realizing now is the time to act if the land is to be saved. In spring 2001, a statewide poll (conducted jointly by Democratic and Republican pollsters) showed that Virginians believe the allocation of funds for land conservation should be as high a state legislative priority as funding of transportation needs and public schools. The poll also found that residents are willing to pay for those conservation efforts.

If you want to have a part in preserving and protecting open land and natural resources, you can learn more about the Land Preservation Fund online or by calling 703-324-8578.

This nonprofit foundation is dedicated not only to preserving Fairfax County's natural resources but also to protecting the county's historic and cultural treasures and enhancing healthful recreational and leisure opportunities. The foundation's goal is to raise private donations to supplement tax dollars and user fees that support parks. Through the foundation, individuals and businesses can make tax-deductible donations of money, securities, land and stock and establish endowments or charitable trusts, which can be used now or in the future.
