Summer Rec-PAC Targeted Inclusion Camps 2008
Eligibility: School-age children (grades 1 6), with disabilities. Participants must be a resident of Fairfax County, Falls Church City, or Fairfax City.
Dates and Times: Monday through Friday, June 30 August 7, 2008, 8:30 a.m. 3:30 p.m. You may register for all six weeks or by the week. There is no Rec-PAC July 4th.
Program: The five selected sites are designed to provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to engage in a variety of recreation activities with peers without disabilities in large group situations. Additional Rec-PAC sites are offered throughout Fairfax County and accommodations are provided; however, the five targeted inclusion sites are the only sites that provide additional staff support at a 1:8 ratio. All other site ratios are 1:20 *. Activities are based on weekly themes and include: sports, fitness, crafts, board and cooperative games, music and drama activities, and special events. Weekly field trips are also offered throughout the program.
Activities are selected that provide opportunities for the individual to:
- Socialize and interact with peers
- Increase or maintain physical fitness levels
- Learn new leisure and recreation skills
- Have fun in a recreation environment
About Inclusion:
Often parents want to know if their child is ready for an inclusion environment. To determine if full inclusion in the Rec-PAC program is right for your child, please consider the following:
- The Rec-PAC program is attended by large numbers of children
- The staff to participant ratio is 1:8 at the inclusion sites
- There are a variety of activity choices available to children
- Both structured and unstructured activities are offered and require children to demonstrate independent leisure skills and self-initiation of activities
- Often activities are presented in a large group environment
- Personal care assistance is not provided
- The environment is highly stimulating and is conducive to individuals who can maintain, with minimal redirection, intervention, prompting or cueing, appropriate self-control
