Trail Construction in Accotink Stream Valley to StartThe Fairfax County Park Authority will begin construction of the Accotink Stream Valley Trail, a 2.5 mile section of asphalt trail between Lake Accotink and Hunter Village Drive¹ in Springfield, VA. This project will result in significant improvements to the Cross County Trail (CCT). Although the existing trail route will be closed for the duration of the project, an alternate route utilizing existing trails and roads has been identified and will open prior to construction. Eighty percent of the $2.25 million dollar project is funded through grants from the Federal Highway Administration. The remaining 20% of project funding is from the 2004 and 2006 Park Bond program. The project includes three pedestrian bridges and an underpass for Old Keene Mill Road. Upon completion, it will substantially increase pedestrian safety and the ease of use on this segment of the CCT and result in the Park Authority's longest section of stream valley trail that is fully accessible to persons with disabilities. The project will break ground within the next month with completion anticipated in the summer of 2009. JSI Paving and Construction of Jersey, Virginia will serve as the primary contractor.
