The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, at its meeting on Monday, Nov. 17, scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m., will make the following presentations to residents and county staff. Adoption Awareness Month
The Board of Supervisors will designate November as Adoption Awareness Month in Fairfax County. The purpose of Adoption Awareness Month is to recognize the valuable contributions of adoptive parents who continually strive to improve the quality of life of the children they bring into their families.

St. Mary of Sorrows Catholic Church
The Board of Supervisors will recognize St. Mary of Sorrows Catholic Church for its 150th anniversary. St. Mary of Sorrows was the first Roman Catholic Church in Fairfax County and is registered as a Virginia Historic Landmark. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic places. During its 150-year history, St. Mary of Sorrows Catholic Church has grown from a mission church to a parish of 3,000 families, serving the spiritual and social needs of its members and the community.

Jeffrey Watkins
The Board of Supervisors will honor the life of Jeffrey Watkins and his years of dedicated service and commitment to Fairfax County and those who live with disabilities. Throughout his life, Watkins was a leader in the Fairfax County disability community, serving on several councils including the Southgate Community Center Advisory Council and the Therapuetic Recreation Council. He was also the founding participant of the Specialty Adapted Resource Club. Therapuetic Recreation Services will name its summer volunteer award in memory of Watkins. 

Friends of Little Rocky Run
The Board of Supervisors will recognize the Friends of Little Rocky Run for their commitment to a cleaner environment and making Fairfax County a better place to live. The Friends of Little Rocky Run’s ongoing objective is to educate the community about the Little Rocky Run watershed and the environment as a whole and to encourage the appreciation of our natural resources. Each year, volunteers from the Friends of Little Rocky Run participate in the annual Alice Ferguson Potomac Watershed Cleanup at Willow Pond. This year they collected more than 95 bags of trash and other articles resulting in the removal of nearly two tons of debris.

Conrad Egan
The Board of Supervisors will recognize Conrad Egan for his years of service to the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority. Egan was appointed to the authority in 1997 and continued to serve as a commissioner until 2008, and as chairman of the authority since 2001. He has also served on numerous committees including the High-Rise Task Force and as co-chair of the Affordable Housing Preservation Action Committee.

Department of Housing and Community Development
The Board of Supervisors will recognize the Department of Housing and Community Development for being awarded the 2008 Thomas H. Muehlenbeck Award for Excellence in Local Government from the Alliance for Innovation. The award recognizes the department for development of the Magnet Housing Pilot Program, which is designed to address the need for a variety of affordable, attractive housing.
